The Australian Open has just finished in Melbourne, with the big winners being Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka. Naomi is part Japanese and has won many fans in her mother’s homeland, especially since becoming the number one ranked women’s player in 2019. As the first Asian player to achieve this rank, many in Japan take inspiration from her performances. The tournament was held in spite of the ongoing pandemic, with the host city experiencing extended lockdowns in 2020 and organizers having to consider all possibilities when planning. The players experienced very little disruption and this could show the way forward for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, which will face similar obstacles.
