Yesterday in Washington DC, Joseph R. Biden became the president of the USA. Following the election last November, there was three months of drama as various controversies emerged after the ballot, culminating in a violent crowd converging on the Capitol Building last week. This lead to the ceremony taking place under heavy security and without the customary crowd of onlookers. However, in his speech President Biden called for unity and understanding after four years of strong division and in the face of the ongoing pandemic. ‘Democracy is fragile. At this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed’, he said. He also spoke about his plans to tackle climate change, to bridge the many divides in the country, and to ‘defend truth and defeat the lies’. We wish him the best of luck in the next four years.
